Acrel energy metering module enables refined measurement of 5G base station energy consumption AMC16L-DETT

    2024-03-11

In 5G networks, base stations are major power consumers, accounting for approximately 80% of total energy consumption. As the number of 5G base stations continues to increase, major operators are under increasing cost pressure. How to effectively reduce base station energy consumption has become a major problem that the industry urgently needs to solve. According to technical experts from China Tower, China Tower launched a special operation last year to unite the three major operators to reduce the electricity cost of 5G base stations through refined electricity metering management.

1 Branch metering of base station communication main equipment

For 5G base stations, the equipment of each operator is mainly DC power supply. The main power-consuming equipment includes baseband processing unit (BBU), radio frequency unit (AAU), feeder, cooling system, etc. There are many communication equipment. If a single-circuit meter is installed, Multiple electricity meters need to be installed, which is costly. Now you only need to install one AMC16L-DETT multi-circuit DC monitoring unit to complete the real-time split-circuit measurement of the DC power consumption of each operator's equipment. It is compact in size, intuitive in display, and easy to install.

2 Branch metering of supporting equipment in the base station computer room

In addition to the communication equipment of the 5G base station, there are switching power supplies, batteries, air conditioners, lighting, monitoring and other supporting equipment in the computer room that also consume electricity, mainly AC power. With the expansion and capacity increase of the 5G base station, the supporting equipment in the computer room also consumes electricity. The amount of electricity also increases and requires precise measurement. It also serves as a basis for calculation of proportional sharing of electricity bills among operators.

Acrel Tower Base Station Energy Consumption Solutions

    (1) This solution was designed for IoT online precise sub energy monitoring of the overall

    telecommunications tower base station.

    (2) Normally, the power system of base station could be devided into AC part and DC part [-

48Vdc]. And usually request a multi-channel metering regarding the different energy usage like

for different telecommunications service provider's base station communications equipment

[DC side]. Or for either the mains supply, back-up generator, lighting, airconditioner of base

station. [AC side] Thus, multi-channel DC or AC energy meter will be the key to solve such

    request.

    (3) This solution was majorly for both cloud&local energy monitoring, different from Acrel local

energy monitoring solution which is designed for base station local energy monitoring by

providing only hardware. In other hands, this solution could be also adapted to 3rd party IoT

energy monitoring system via API or SDK for data transferation
