    In recent years, the overall revenue of global operators has continued to decline, while OPEX expenses have continued to increase. Among them, base station electricity costs account for more than 30% of network operating expenses. Due to factors such as larger bandwidth, more channels, and low device integration, the power consumption of 5G base stations is equivalent to 3-4 times that of 4G base stations. As of September 5, more than 480,000 5G base stations have been built across the country, and it is expected to exceed 600,000 stations by the end of the year. It is estimated that the annual electricity bill will exceed 30 billion. Energy saving of 5G base stations has become a thorny issue that must be considered in 5G commercial use.


    The current mainstream power-saving technology idea is to start from the base station radio frequency. While taking into account the experience, it builds a three-level technical solution system for equipment, sites and networks, and combines AI and other technologies with a multi-pronged approach. Judging from the pilot, the effect is remarkable. At the same time, peak-shifting electricity consumption and local electricity discounts have also alleviated 5G power consumption to a certain extent.


    According to GSMA statistics, since 2012, the average annual compound growth rate of global operators' revenue has begun to decrease year by year, while the average annual compound growth rate of OPEX has increased year by year. The gap between the two continues to grow, putting increasing pressure on operators' revenue. Among operators' OPEX, base station electricity expenses account for more than 30% of the network operation part and about 10% of the entire OPEX expenditure. Data shows that China Mobile’s electricity expenditure in 2018 was approximately 22 billion yuan.


    According to the architectural analysis of the cellular network, the base station equipment room in the entire network is the main power consumption part of the entire network, accounting for more than 60% of the energy consumption of the entire network, of which the power consumption of base station equipment accounts for about 50%. The energy consumption of radio frequency equipment accounts for more than 90% of the energy consumption of the entire base station. Therefore, energy-saving solutions will focus on base station equipment, especially radio frequency equipment.


    Acrel Tower Base Station Energy Consumption Solutions

    (1) This solution was designed for IoT online precise sub energy monitoring of the overall

    telecommunications tower base station.

    (2) Normally, the power system of base station could be devided into AC part and DC part [-

    48Vdc]. And usually request a multi-channel metering regarding the different energy usage like

    for different telecommunications service provider's base station communications equipment

    [DC side]. Or for either the mains supply, back-up generator, lighting, airconditioner of base

    station. [AC side] Thus, multi-channel DC or AC energy meter will be the key to solve such

    request.

    (3) This solution was majorly for both cloud&local energy monitoring, different from Acrel local

    energy monitoring solution which is designed for base station local energy monitoring by

    providing only hardware. In other hands, this solution could be also adapted to 3rd party IoT

    energy monitoring system via API or SDK for data transferation
